The Family Count Too – A day of education and support
Reading University, Berkshire on Saturday 25th July 2009

OCD-UK are delighted to announce the first event of its kind, an
OCD conference with a difference, a conference aimed entirely at
the family, friends and carers of people with Obsessive-Compulsive
Disorder.
This unique conference takes place in Reading, Berkshire on
Saturday 25th July 2009 where we have gathered some of the
countries leading OCD specialists.
Although OCD-UK have realised from the beginning that there is a lack of support out there for those actually caring for OCD sufferers within their own family or circle of friends and thus responding by bringing me on to the Committee in 2006 to grow our FFC strategy (being a mum with an OCD child), we didn’t realise just what a clamour of demand there was out there until our Annual Conference in Derby last October when our workshop for FFCs was PACKED. It became so apparent that people caring for their loved-ones who suffer from this debilitating condition were suffering terribly too and they were just not being given the support and help that they desperately needed either from the health professionals or the community as a whole.
In response to this huge need and to try and address the many questions posed by FFCs to ease their burden and to maximise the support they can give to the sufferer in their midst, we decided to create a FFC stand-alone conference. Here we felt we could devote some valuable time to gain some gems of wisdom from the experts, to mix together ourselves to offer mutual support, to network and glean new ideas on treatment, and to generally grow our own caring and coping strategies towards our loved ones with OCD.
So – we can now announce that the Family, Friends and Carers Conference
is in the bag and due to take place on the 25th July, 2009 at The University
of Reading in Berkshire. It will be a whole day event and we will endeavour
to cover every aspect of this hitherto much ignored subject – looking at how
each family dynamic permutation may create its own problems and will
need specialist concentration (E.g. parents with young children with OCD,
families and friends coping with teenagers and young adults with OCD,
children with parents who have OCD, siblings of OCD sufferers, etc. etc.);
how to be the therapist at home; advances in understanding and treatments
of OCD, etc. etc.
We are putting together an exciting project with some brilliant speakers who will impart their expertise, advice and experience and offer encouragement, as well as workshops where can have more personal guidance and ask detailed questions to allay our fears and hopefully learn coping strategies. We would also like to thank Professor Roz Shafran and Clinical Psychologist Chloe Volz for their planning help and suggestions.
One thing we can promise is that we will be devoting this conference to meet YOUR demands so put this date in your diary.
