Kevin's Wartime Collection

My Collection of print based material relating to the war that civilians fought on the Home Front during the Second World War has been housed in Glasgow Caledonian University Research Collections as a Special Collection since October 1999.

I have been collecting, books, magazines, journals, pamphlets, letters, postcards, photographs, diaries and other ephemeral items relating to the Home Front since 1987.

I would say that the collection has been a positive in my life as it helps me to forget about intrusive thoughts and worry that I experience as part of my OCD.

The Research Collection Team are really supportive of me and the collection, you could not ask for better people to work along side at Glasgow Caledonian University. The collection has been used by the B.B.C., researchers, authors, students, pupils and members of the public.

I have been able to help students with their dissertations and pupils with their school projects. I have had inquiries from Australia, America and Israel. I have had articles on the collection printed in newspapers. I have had displays on wartime gardening and farming and Christmas in wartime.

Despite this OCD has got in the way. As you can see I don’t have a stressful job and I am supported in many ways. This just goes to show that OCD is complicated to try and understand .

For me when I have very positive things in my life OCD finds ways of counteracting this. Mainly I worry that I might say or do something to offend people when things are going good for me. I worry because the good things might be taken away from me.

Working with the public is very stressful for me. Twice I have had to take time off from work because of this. I feel that to give in and find a job not working with the public would be to give into OCD.

I feel that my collection and the knowledge that I have built up on the Home Front during the Second World War can help others.

Despite OCD and the problems that it causes me I aim to carry on with the collection and hope that it can be of benefit to people in the present and in the future. OCD really tires me out and hinders the collection (at times I worry so much when people want to talk about and have a look at the collection) but I would not have it any other way and think that it is a positive achievement for me and against OCD.

More of Kevin's collection can be seen at the website of Caledonian University.
