After years of cultivation and loving hair care products, composer Simon Dobson made the ultimate sacrifice for OCD-UK and decided to have his famous dreadlocks snipped back to their roots!
Simon had been growing his hair for 10 years, and had sported dreadlocks for eight. "Dreads are more of a statement that just long hair" he said. "You're saying something about who you are and how you live. To have dreadlocks in my profession is pretty crazy. To walk out on stage in a concert hall, often in a foreign country, was a big thing.
When I started growing them at music college, people said it would hinder me. Now I've achieved things I felt it was time to cut them off. For the last eight years I have been growing dreadlocks and now feel that I have gotten to a point in my life and career where it doesn't matter that much to me anymore to have them. ""
He added: "As someone who has a diagnosed OCD suffer in my family I have seen how debilitating the disease is and how completely misunderstood this and many other mental illnesses can be. It is important to me to help the charity OCD-UK as much as possible."
About 40 people gathered at Simon's home to encourage him and help chop off his locks on Monday (22nd Feb 2010) evening, everyone got to chop a dread or two.
"Now I feel absolutely great about it. Just before we cut them off it was a different story. I was pretty nervous.
Before we finished the total ticked past £2,000 so I was really happy. There were people I didn't know donating, as it happened, online," Simon said. "It was a great feeling."
Simon went from the long dreadlocks above, 8 years of long hard work, to this.....
Simon now has hair about one inch long. "It's very weird looking in the mirror, I don't recognise the person looking back at me." Simon told 4BarsRest.com: "It was a strange old feeling losing my hair - although it was made easy by seeing how much people had pledged to the charity."
You can still support Simon's efforts by making donations on his Just Giving page www.justgiving.com/dreadlessdobson and following the instructions, and four good reasons to support Simon (in his own words).
Please give what you can, as:
a) i'm pretty scared of cutting off 2 feet of rasta dreads
b) its taken me 10 years to get them this length
c) the charity does wonderful work and need all the funding it can get, and
d) you want me to look nice and tidy don't you??!?!?!?!!??
Simon is just one of the fantastic fundraiser's that OCD-Uk are so fortunate to have, and this is one of the most generous donations we have ever had, 8 years worth of Dreadlocks!
