Tips for finding sponsorsWhen holding a sponsored event, one problem that those taking part sometimes have is finding people to sponsor them, so we have compiled these tips to assist you in your quest.
Remember, don't be
shy and ask people, it is for a good cause after all and at the very worst
they can say no.
Ensure that you are
aware of the charity’s aims and what the money will be used for.
Fundraising requires persuasion and to do this effectively you need a
good knowledge of the work of the charity. If someone asks you a question
when you approach them for sponsorship and you can't answer then it will
not help your cause.
Try and ensure that
the first sponsorship on the form is generous. It's a good idea to approach
the most generous people first. It's often the case that future sponsors
will follow their lead!
Set yourself a fund-raising
target, say £50 and write it at the top of the form. It will encourage
people to donate generously towards your target.
E-fundraising is a
great way to reach all your friends in just a minute, email your friends
and tell them about your sponsored event and watch the offers roll in.
The person can even make the donation online via our secure server. We
will set up a sponsorship page for you. Although one down side to this
tactic is that it's more difficult for sponsors to say no if you're standing
in front of them.
Always ask sponsors
to tick the 'Gift Aid' box if the person works and pays tax. For every
£1 that someone donates, if they check the 'Gift Aid' option the
government will pay us an extra 28p at no cost to the individual donating
the £1.
Don't forget to ask
your employer to sponsor you. Many will match the amount you raise, for
example if you raise £68 many employers (especially large companies)
will donate £68 too. You could also invite colleagues to donate
by placing an advert on your company notice board or even intranet.
Don't forget to put
up a poster on the notice board in your local pub, supermarket, gym etc.
Carry your sponsorship
form with you everywhere you go, you never know who you will bump into.
Note down key events
- such as parties and family 'get togethers' - where it would be a good
idea to take your sponsorship form along with you and target potential
sponsors.
The difficult part
is collecting the money afterwards, so it might be worth asking the person
if they want to give it you in advance, you can always send them a photo
of you doing the sponsored event later on. In fact we would happily give
you a page on the website with your event report including totals raised
and pictures. You can then send the link to anyone that donated.
Please don't forget
to say 'Thank You' to everyone who donates.
If anyone shows an interest
in OCD or the charity we will happily email or post them more information,
so offer to send them information if they want it.
and Good luck!
