Know your rights

OCD-UK is often asked questions about what rights the sufferer has when it comes to things like 'Who can see my medical records?', 'Will OCD affect my life/health insurance premiums?'.

We will try and answer all your questions in this section. Please remember that these are only guidelines and subject to change. For our part we will of course endeavour to keep our information as up to date as possible.

If you have any questions or concerns relating to the topics discussed here or have a question not covered here please don't hesitate to contact us and we will do our best to find the answer to your question or you can check with your local Citizens' Advice Bureau.

Life Insurance

We have been asked a few times if having OCD will affect the sufferer in obtaining life insurance or if it will effect the premium.

After some research we found that the fact you have OCD should not prevent you obtaining life insurance however it will probably affect the premiums that you will pay. This is preliminary research from making a few telephone calls; OCD-UK intends to follow this up in more detail in due course.

Can we register as disabled?

Some OCD sufferers have asked the questions 'Are we classed as disabled?'

This is a difficult question to answer and because OCD affects each sufferer in a different way and at different times there will never be a clear Yes or No answer.

Basically only severe cases of OCD will allow you to be classed as disabled and in that case you would be eligible for Disability Living Allowance (DLA) if it affects your ability in getting around, or you have problems attending to your personal care, including preparation of a main meal per day.
