OCD-UK Webinar Series 2025

'It’s the feeling inside my head’: Understanding and managing mental contamination in OCD
Professor Roz Shafran, Chair in Translational Psychology, University College London (UCL).
The presentation was facilitated by Megan from the OCD-UK team.
Presentation subject
Mental contamination is a common but often misunderstood experience for many people living with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). It can feel like an inner sense of dirtiness or pollution, even when there’s no physical contact with something “contaminated.” This webinar is designed specifically for individuals who think they may be experiencing mental contamination. It will explore what mental contamination is, how it is different from contact contamination, and why it happens. You’ll learn how feelings of guilt, shame, betrayal, or even just being around certain people can trigger feelings of internal dirtiness. Practical strategies to identify and reduce mental contamination will be presented. This session will be interactive with the opportunity to ask questions within the webinar format..
